Honey Found It First — Driftwood, Beach Walks and New Garden Features at High Beach

Some of the best ideas at High Beach seem to start with a walk to the beach.

This one started with Honey. During a walk along Berrow Beach, she led us towards a pile of driftwood that had been washed up by the tide. Among it was one really unusual twisted root section — possibly walnut — weathered silver by the sea and full of natural shapes, hollows and character.

It was far too interesting to leave behind. So after the first walk turned into a bit of a discovery, we went back with the right tools, a wheelbarrow and a little more determination.

From Beach Find to Garden Feature

The main piece has now found its new home beside the hot tub area, set against the timber fencing where it feels completely at home. Rather than just using it as decoration, the plan is to turn it into a living feature, with sedums and creeping phlox growing through the natural gaps and crevices over time.

It should soften beautifully as it settles in — a little bit wild, a little bit coastal, and very much connected to the beach just a short walk away.

Smaller pieces of driftwood have also been worked into the borders around the bungalow, sitting naturally amongst boulders, gravel, coastal planting and soft flowering plants.

The Garden Is Really Starting to Come Together

The driftwood is only one part of the wider garden work taking shape at High Beach this spring. We’ve also been developing a new gravel pathway through the garden, adding new hedging and refreshing the borders with coastal-style planting chosen to suit the Somerset seaside setting.

The aim is to make the outside space feel more established, more private and more enjoyable for guests — whether that’s children playing on the lawn, dogs pottering safely in the enclosed garden, or everyone gathering outside after a day at the beach.

New hedging around the boundaries will continue to grow in over the coming seasons, helping create a softer backdrop and a more sheltered feel. The planting will take time to mature, but it already adds structure, colour and texture to the garden.

It is these little details that we hope guests notice — the sense that High Beach is being carefully looked after and improved each season.

Hot Tub Evenings and Beach Walk Days

One of the nicest things about High Beach is how easily the days flow. A morning walk through the dunes. Time on the beach. A visit to Brean, Burnham-on-Sea or one of the local attractions. Then back to the bungalow for the garden, the games room and a soak in the hot tub.

For families, it means space to spread out. For dog owners, it means a secure garden and beach walks close by. For returning guests, we hope it means spotting something new each time they stay.

Honey has inspected the driftwood, tested the pathway and approved the sunny terrace. So we are taking that as a good sign.
